I have noticed lately that all “big brand” companies are adding natural lines of skin care products to their existing lines. While it’s great that they are following people’s trends (or just trying to cash in), all they are doing is taking out parabens from their products and marking them “all natural”. Again, while no parabens is a great thing, it doesn’t mean that their products are as natural as they claim to be. Last time I checked, all these “natural” bottles still contained synthetic fragrances, sulfates and had shea butter as the last ingredient on a list of 30 hard to pronounce words. If you are truly concerned about what you are putting on your body, you have to look further than your usual department store, but you don’t have to look too far! Internet is a great resource for sourcing out skin care products. And it makes it possible for simple families like yours and mine to operate their businesses. Here’s a story of one of these families.
Six years ago the Rzepka family let a co-worker put a beehive on their family farm. They didn’t plan on being responsible for it, but due to unforeseen events they ended up being beekeepers. Turns our that the bees’ world is very connected to ours – any changes in our environment affect their environment as well. The foods we eat and the chemicals we use have certain impacts on bees and humans. That’s how the family got the idea to make natural skincare and hair products using honey, beeswax, and other ingredients that are good for people and the world. Besides respecting people and the environment, this family also donates 10% of their net profits from all sales to SweetYear.org.
Beecology has a line of all natural products such as handmade bar soap, body wash, shampoo, hand & body cream and lip balm. All products consist of at least 95% renewable and naturally-derived ingredients like corn, soy, and coconut. The company is striving to make their products 100% natural as more ingredients become readily available. All products are people tested and never animal tested. Beecology products do not contain parabens which can cause allergic reactions or sodium lauryl sulfate which have been shown to dry out skin and hair.
For my review I received a Small Gift Crate with Lip Balm and extra mini body wash. This set contains sample bottles of most of Beecology’s products. The bottles are 1oz. in size which are large enough to last through many washes and applications. I personally love and adore anything sample sized. I like to try the products before I commit myself to large bottles. And I like that small bottles are portable and can be taken on trips. I have also already mentioned on my blog that I love buying sample packs like this one, opening them up and giving contents out as small gifts to friends and family.
First I tried the All Natural Sulfate-Free Shampoo and Conditioner. The shampoo is a blend of honey and botanical ingredients such as chamomile and yarrow. First time I used it I was surprised at how much fragrance this shampoo had considering that it has no artificial fragrance. It smelled like a flower garden. At first I was a bit overwhelmed by the scent, but with a couple uses I have actually grown to really like it. It’s pleasant, relaxing and it definitely smells natural. The conditioner contains nourishing ingredients such as honey, avocado and hemp oil. It is lighter on the scent than the shampoo, but still has a pleasant fragrance. The results from using both of this products did not disappoint. My hair now feels considerably smoother and shinier as well as fluffier. Usually my hair is pretty dull looking and very frizzy. If I can get shinier and less frizzy hair from using natural hair products, there’s nothing else I would ask for (hair related)! Thus both the shampoo and conditioner get my stamp of approval.
Hand & Body Cream is a blend of honey, olive oil and shea butter. It is very very light on the fragrance but heavy on the healing power. This cream is a bit thicker in consistency than I’m used to, but still spreads onto the skin fairly easily. I don’t generally suffer from dry skin, but I’ve been doing quite a bit of cleaning lately which dried out my hands. Going to bed with itchy dry hands isn’t okay in my books and I liberally applied this cream every night to see if I could find any relief. It absorbed quickly and softened hands immediately. It took away the dryness and the itch.
All Natural Body Wash comes in three fragrances and I got to try two of them. All are a blend of coconut, olive and organic hemp oils which are known for their moisturizing and rejuvenating effects. I got to try the Natural Honey and Peppermint and Natural Grapefruit and Lemongrass scents. I’m not too much of a fan of minty fragrances thus my favorite was hands down the grapefruit and lemongrass scent. It has a very pleasant, energizing scent and I can actually smell the real grapefruit in it. Although chemical-free, the body wash has a great lathering and cleansing power. You only need a drop for a full wash.
Natural Lip Balm is beeswax based with addition of a list of natural oils like coconut, olive and peppermint. It has a minty fragrance and taste. Mint isn’t my favorite scent when it comes to most of skin care products, but it is when it comes to lip balms. I find minty lip balms more refreshing and healing than the fruity ones. I loved the consistency of this lip balm. It’s firm, smooth and stays on the lips for hours. I find that lip balms can be a hit or a miss. Some are too soft and sticky, some are too dry. This one is just my cup of tea!
Overall, I’ve enjoyed trying out all of the Beecology’s natural products. They are 95% natural, paraben and sls-free and all have pleasant scents and great cleaning/moisturizing powers.
If like me, you enjoy finding out some facts about what you are using or where it came from, check out this page of Facts About Bees. Can’t say it’s not fascinating!
