Let’s be honest here. Frozen food will never be as good as fresh. But I don’t know any single person who doesn’t use some kind of frozen products. When you have kids and not much time to cook meals – frozen food can really save some time in the kitchen. I try to always have a few quick meals in the freezer, for days when I just don’t have the energy or all the fresh food has ran out.
It is important to me that ALL foods I buy, fresh or frozen are as natural and organic as possible. I do not consume non-organic meats (unless I am at a restaurant, but then I never really order meat). I’ve seen and read enough information about non-organic meats and dairy that I would actually rather pay twice as much (even being on a tight budget) than buy the non-organic version. It is also important to me that the products I buy are healthy. Occasional junk food does end up in my cupboard, but honestly about 80% of all the snacks are from the natural foods sections of the stores.
So what kind of frozen foods can one find in my freezer? There is always at least a couple of frozen pizzas. Yes, I am somewhat ashamed to admit that this is a guilty pleasure of mine. They are so easy to prepare and so yummy to eat. And both my son and husband never complain when I make frozen pizzas. I love thin-crusted pizzas with mushrooms. If I see that there is a new brand or variety on the market, I have to try it!
I recently made a trip to Whole Foods Market in search of a brand called Life Choices Foods. Unfortunately it wasn’t available at any of the stores around me, thus a trip was planned. When I asked a Whole Foods employee about this brand, they proceeded to tell me how yummy Life Choices Foods are and how their frozen chicken products are great. My son hates chicken nuggets (good boy, eh?) and I couldn’t find the fish sticks which I wanted to try. But when I approached the pizza freezer, I knew right away which product I was getting for this review!
Organic Mushroom & Onion Pizza is made with an Organic whole wheat thin crust piled with Organic corn, Organic mushrooms, Organic red peppers, Organic broccoli and Organic onions! I don’t even need to list the ingredients list (which can be found on the website), because all of the ingredients are real and 98% organic. Not a single item I can’t pronounce.
Here’s a play by play starting with the box.

Pizza is wrapped in plastic and contains no extra cardboard. The less paper used – the better.

Unwrapped and still frozen. Toppings are shifted a bit, but I’m pretty sure it’s because I carried the pizza around for an hour in a very hot weather.

Baked and ready to eat!

I did have to bake this pizza for a couple of extra minutes under the broiler, because the cheese wasn’t well melted. It still only took about 9 minutes in the oven. The crust was softer than what I’m used to with thin crusted pizzas. Which worked out well for my son, since it was easier for him to eat it (and he ate lots). I was surprised that I actually liked the crust even though it was whole wheat. I love multigrain, but not whole wheat breads. And I’ve tried a whole wheat crust before and it wasn’t any good. Overall the pizza tasted pretty good. It’s at par with other natural frozen pizzas on the market. I can’t say that this is my new favorite, but it tastes good enough and I’d be happy to have it again anytime.
It’s great to see a company like Life Choices Foods on the market. A company that cares about health, sustainability and community. They have actually been around since 2002 starting out with just pizzas and frozen entrees. Since then, they’ve launched a whole series of healthy frozen meals and even launched into the US under the name of Living Right Natural Foods. Life Choices prides itself on using the highest quality Organic ingredients on the market and will never cut corners, ensuring you receive the best quality product on the market.
You can find Life Choices Foods in the natural/healthy sections of your store freezers. Products are available at the following locations. Their pizzas retail for $8.99 at Whole Foods, which is the same as all the other organic pizzas (I checked). But I did hear that they are also available at Canadian Superstores for a lot cheaper. I will make sure to look into that as I’m still very curious to try the fish sticks and some of their other products. They even have a $1 off printable coupon on their website to save you a bit of money :)
