I’ve loved books ever since I was a little kid. I learned to read when I was 5 years old and read everything I could get my hands on from kids stories to encyclopedias. I never really lost the love of reading, but with a little guy around it’s impossible to concentrate on anything. I might not be able to read anything for adults, but I sure do read a lot of kids books these days! Little guy loves flipping through books and he’s acquired quite a collection in these past two years. He can’t sit still yet for a whole story, so we mostly flip through picture books. I can’t wait for him to start listening properly so I would finally be able to read real stories to him.
Little Green Books sent us two books to read, which are appropriate for my little guy’s age. We received What Do You See? and My First Garden. I’ve never seen books made with 100% recycled material before. They are printed on a thick brown cardboard-paper with vegetable and soy inks meaning they are environmentally friendly! Little Green Books is a new eco-friendly kids series from Simon & Schuster Publishing. Their books focus on teaching kids dangers of global warming, benefits of recycling, how to help endangered animals and other benefits of being green.
What Do You See? Is a lift-the-flap book about endangered animals. It features a rhymed riddle about the animals and the kids are supposed to guess what the animal is. On the opposite page, there is a hint picture of what the animal is and when you lift-the-flap you get to see who it is! I have to be very honest, I’m a big animal lover but even I didn’t know some of the animals that are endangered! For example, did you know that rhinoceroses are on the list? I think I had more fun reading the book and learning about the animals than my two year old, which is understandable at his age. But he had a lot of fun lifting the flaps and seeing what’s behind there.
My First Garden is about a mommy and a daughter growing a garden from scratch. They plant the seeds and we get to see what they were able to grow. I love that the vegetable featured aren’t your most common ones. We get to learn about purple turnips and yellow squashes. We also get to learn what they look like in the garden when they are ripe and ready to be picked up. For example, carrots are grown in soil and tomatoes are on the vine. The book also features a cut-out handle so kids can carry it around like a little bag.
I really enjoyed reading both of these books and would love to check out the rest of the Little Green Books series. I love that their books are fun, informative and eco-friendly. Buy these books for your own little ones or get them for gifts. I absolutely love giving and receiving kids books as gifts! There is just something special about kids books, can’t even put my finger on what exactly that is. :)
Little Green Books website is actually a very fun place to check out with your kids. They have a games section where kids can play interactive games which are themed like the books they have just read. There is also a green tips section for kids. I love their tip about hosting parties and using paper cups. If you write kids names on them, they will be more likely to keep reusing them as opposed to keep getting new ones. And finally, check out the books section where you can read about the series and find books appropriate for your little ones.
