Babies love to be swaddled. At least that’s what I heard, but never was able to try out on my own two kiddos. Hospital staff makes it look so easy, but once you are on your own at home it’s a different story. I’ve tried many times to swaddle properly and I gave up, because it wasn’t working out for me. So there I was trying to put on tiny outfits on a tiny baby. When they are just born, it can be tricky to do, especially for first time parents (I was terrified to put on mittens on my son, because I thought I’d break his tiny hands!) But I’m glad I didn’t go through with improper swaddling, because I could have put my kids at risk of developing Hip Dysplasia.
Hip Dysplasia is a common condition among newborns. It affects as many as 75,000 babies per year in North America (that’s 1% of all newborns). Babies have frog-like legs (too cute!) and they need to be “kept” naturally and not extended straight. If swaddled improperly (too tight), it can lead to Hip Dysplasia or dislocation. “Treatment ranges from wearing a harness or brace to undergoing surgery. These conditions can get worse with age and are linked to early adult arthritis and hip-replacement surgery.” HALO Innovations did a study on swaddling and apparently 82% of parents swaddle their babies. Some of us are swaddling experts (good for you!) and some need some help. I definitely needed help!
HALO SleepSack is the original wearable blanket. It’s the #1 trusted choice of hospitals and parents. It replaces loose blankets in the crib which can cover baby’s face and interfere with breathing. HALO SleepSack helps babies sleep safer and better. Babies can’t kick this “blanket” off because they are swaddled in it. Inside it’s warm and cuddly. We all know how badly babies sleep (don’t even get me started on my son). If anything can make them sleep better, I’m all over it!
I received the 100% Cotton SleepSack Swaddle in a small size for my 2 month old. There are also preemie and newborn sizes. Small is generally for 3-6 months or 13-18lbs. My girly is “off the graph” tall (literally), that’s why I chose a small. I was impressed with the thick cotton material and how the SleepSack worked. Before trying it out, I threw in in the wash (cold water/delicate cycle). When the SleepSack came out, the material shrank around the velcro strips, which are used for swaddling and made it look a bit crooked.
I popped my baby into the SleepSack and it was super easy to swaddle her up. As you can see on the photo, I still need to improve on my swaddling skills even with the SleepSack. I’m scared to make it too tight, but technically I shouldn’t worry, because the legs will still be loose. My girly’s legs actually reach all the way to the end of this sleeping bag! It’s safe to say she’ll grow out if it in the next couple of weeks. But for now, I’m using it for her naps and it works well since I don’t need any extra blankets in the crib (during the day anyways). I can’t say from my own experience whether it gets the baby to sleep better. My girly is such a great sleeper, she’ll sleep in anything and anywhere and for long periods of time! I wish I could go back in time and try this with my son who never slept. Whether it helps to sleep better or not, it still helps to reduce the risk of SIDS and as a parents, that’s very comforting to hear! And a portion of every sale goes to help charities in the fight again SIDS.
The first month with your newborn is the hardest and the scariest one. I wish I had the SleepSack for the first month and I wouldn’t have really needed any other clothes. For anyone with little ones or anyone expecting, this is a neat product. HALO SleepSack retails for $28.95 and is available online or at many retailers including Target, Amazon and Babies R Us.
